Rattlesnake causes blackout to three jails

A rattlesnake slithered into a fuse box and caused a short circuit, cutting power to three detention facilities for 17 hours, San Diego County (Calif.) Sheriff officials said.
Full power was restored to the East Mesa Detention Facility, the George Bailey Detention Facility and the Correction Corporation of America Facility at 5 a.m. Wednesday after the snake caused major damage to electrical equipment just after noon Tuesday.
The Central Production Facility, which prepares meals for all jail inmates had also been without power.
East Mesa was operating on backup generators after being without power for five hours, and George Bailey and the Corrections Corporation of America were operating in reduced power mode with only emergency systems functioning.
All prisoners received meals Tuesday, and those at the George Bailey Facility were taken outside in small groups because the air conditioning system was down.
There were no inmate problems, officials said.
All operations, including visits, were expected to be back to normal Wednesday.
