FLORIDA - The top official at the Florida Department of Corrections says restoring money cut from prison education programs and parole officer budgets are some of his department's top priorities. The Department of Corrections' current budget of $2.2 billion is about 1.5% of the state's overall budget. Next year the department is asking the Legislature for an additional $286.8 million, but that could be difficult in a tight budget year. Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil said in a telephone interview Wednesday that he understands the cash crunch. A large portion of his department's request - $81 million - would pay for the cost of new inmates expected to enter Florida prisons. |
