The Florida Department of Corrections has lifted a quarantine at the Glades Correctional Institution that was ordered after officials learned two officers had tuberculosis. The Palm Beach County health department has tested all of the Belle Glade prison's employees and each of its 1,000 prisoners and has approved the resumption of prisoner transfers and visits, Department of Corrections spokesman Sterling Ivey said. The World Health Organization reports that the level of tuberculosis in prisons around the world may be as much as 100 times higher than that of the rest of the population. Tuberculosis in the United States has generally been on a marked decline for years. A total of 14,871 cases of active tuberculosis were reported in 2003, a 1.9 percent drop from the previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Foreign-born residents account for the greatest proportion of U.S. cases -- 53 percent. |
