KENTUCKY - The Kentucky Supreme Court yesterday rejected possibly the last appeal that could have halted today's execution of Marco Allen Chapman -- as the confessed child killer continued preparing to die, and death-penalty opponents held protest vigils. Chapman has sought to be executed since pleading guilty four years ago to sexually assaulting and stabbing Carolyn Marksberry and fatally slashing the throats of her son, Cody Sharon, 6, and daughter, Chelbi Sharon, 7, in their Gallatin County home in 2002. Police have said a third child, Courtney Sharon, then 10, survived the attack by playing dead. Courtney, now a 16-year-old high school athlete, was cut on the face.
