| Repairs proposal stalls |

FLORIDA - A proposal to spend half of Putnam County's contingency fund on long-needed jail repairs hit a brick wall on Tuesday. The need wasn't questioned by county commissioners, only the timing. Commissioner Brad Purcell said the sheriff's office didn't seek the $180,000 to fix the lock-and-alarm system during the recently completed budget writing process and he opposed using half of the 2008-09 contingency fund to pay for it. Also, Purcell said he was suspicious that the system's manufacturer was drumming up business during a weak economy by now saying the system couldn't be maintained. Read more.
