| Officials remain optimistic about site |

MISSISSIPPI - The tone of last week’s meeting between the community and officials from a private prison company was upbeat and positive regarding the proposal to construct a federal prison in the city if the company is successful in winning a federal contract. A meeting was held last Thursday at the Livingston Center at Roosevelt State Park featuring officials from Cornell Companies, Inc., which operates 75 corrections facilities including the one in Walnut Grove as well as mayors from Morton and Walnut Grove. The meeting was designed to give an update on the proposal to build an $80 million facility to house a 2,000 bed inmate facility. The type of inmates that would be housed would be those serving a sentence of 90 months or less with an average sentence of 18 months; no recent history of violence or escape; primary offenses would include drug and immigration violations.
