Eight correction officers and eight inmates exchanged bumps and bruises during a scuffle at Rikers Island Friday, a prison spokesman said. The inmates were being transported inside the George R. Vierno Center, a high-security facility within the compound, at about 7:30 p.m. when one prisoner punched a correction officer, said Thomas Antenen, a spokesman for the city Department of Correction. As another officer moved in to break up the fight, several more inmates joined the melee, Antenen said. All were treated for minor injuries. Antenen said two correction captains were taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan for evaluation and were quickly released. |
