| Pakistan lacks probation officers |

PAKISTAN - Salam Dharejo of the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) has said that though section 9 of Juvenile Justice System Ordinance 2000 (JJSO) clearly states that it is mandatory for police officers to inform the probation officer of the area about the arrest of juvenile offenders, hundreds of minor children are brutally punished and kept in police custody against the essence of the fair justice. “There are only three probation officers in Sindh, and due to their absence in many districts, juvenile offenders are unlawfully detained in police lockups,” he said. Talking during the consultation workshop arranged by Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) at local hotel, he said at present in Sindh province there are only three panels of lawyers established in Shikarpur, Dadu and Larkana districts.
