NEW JERSEY - The smiles on three Lakewood men last month as a jury declared them guilty in a brazen daytime gang murder spoke of what the State Commission of Investigation is hearing: violent street gangs operate as well in prison as they do on the streets. It's high time for authorities to use all available means to stop illegal activities behind bars. A recent one-day SCI hearing revealed gangs such as the Bloods thrive inside our 14 state prisons by getting cellular phones and chargers from friends, rogue guards or civilian employees. An ex-inmate testified "very few" inmates he knew with contraband cell phones were caught. Guards searched his cell only twice in 18 months. Read more.
