Cornell prison mulls growth |

PENNSYLVANIA - Corrections is a growing industry in Philipsburg, and one local prison is proposing expansion. Cornell Cos. Inc., headquartered in Houston, operates a private prison under contract with the federal Bureau of Prisons. Opened in 2006 after years of delays, it is now looking to expand its operations. Charles Seigel, Cornell vice president of public policy, said the company was asked by the Bureau of Prisons to submit a proposal to expand the prison as the federal government is looking at options for housing additional criminal illegal immigrants. The Moshannon Valley Correctional Center, in Decatur Township, Clearfield County, just outside Philipsburg, is the only criminal illegal immigrant facility of its kind in the Northeast. Read more.
