| State law would address juvenile facility |

COLORADO - A state senator is drafting legislation that would require employees at a troubled northern Colorado juvenile detention facility to report all alleged assaults or incidents of abuse to police after counselors there complained that two youths suffered broken bones in custody but that the incidents weren't reported to police. Under current law, the Department of Human Services, which oversees the Platte Valley Youth Services Center in Greeley and other state juvenile detention facilities, can choose whether to notify police of incidents at youth camps or to turn the cases over to county social services agencies for investigation. Department Director Karen Beye said the Weld County Department of Human Services investigated three cases of alleged abuse of juvenile detainees at Platte Valley over the past six months and found no wrongdoing by employees.
