COLORADO - State corrections officials are having trouble paying their legal bills, and some local prosecutors who handled the cases are feeling the pinch. Department of Corrections Controller Dennis Diaz has notified district attorneys that the agency might not be able to pay for legal work done this year until early next year. District attorneys routinely prosecute cases involving inmates who commit crimes in state prisons in their districts, and then are reimbursed by the state. State officials say expenses from two death penalty cases in the 18th Judicial District, which includes Arapahoe County, contributed to a budget crunch. This year, district attorneys sent bills for as much as $475,000. State officials say a normal year's tally is about $150,000. |
