INDIANAPOLIS - A settlement agreement filed this week in U.S. District Court will end the housing of inmates inside the Marion County Community Corrections Center by Feb. 1. The agreement, if accepted by the court, would end a lawsuit brought against the county in April 2007 by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana. The ACLU said conditions including insufficient sanitation and lax security threatened inmates' health and safety. Community Corrections advisory board members said they agreed to close the aging building, known as the jail annex, because a renovation exceeding $1 million still wouldn't bring it up to corrections standards. The minimum-security facility, 147 E. Maryland St., has housed inmates serving short sentences for lower-level crimes. |
