| Microwave access seen as danger |

MICHIGAN - The union representing [officers] at Michigan prisons wants state officials to remove prisoner access to microwave ovens following an assault in which a prisoner is accused of heating a mixture of Vaseline and water and throwing it in an officer's face. The 49-year-old officer at the Huron Valley Men's Facility near Ypsilanti was hospitalized for two days with second-degree burns and may have long-term damage to one of his eyes as a result of the incident Friday, said Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan. The man accused of attacking him, John Deverney, 48, has a history of assaultive behavior toward staff and other inmates, Marlan said. Deverney, serving a 39- to 90-year sentence for second-degree murder, faces internal disciplinary charges. Michigan State Police have begun a criminal investigation, Marlan said. Read more.
