GEORGIA - The Georgia Department of Corrections is eyeing private prisons as a way to cope with a growing inmate population as the state's budget crisis crimps its ability to expand prison space. Bidding closes today for private companies' proposals to house as many as 1,500 male inmates in existing or expanded space at a current prison. Private companies can build prisons faster and operate them for slightly less than the state, said Michael Nail, deputy director of the department's corrections division. The department faces at least $66 million in budget cuts, and officials are consolidating lock-ups as the number of inmates increases. Read more.
