| Smoke-free inmates turn to snacks |

CANADA - Corrections Canada handed out $25,000 worth of carrot sticks, popcorn and other snacks this summer to help prisoners in Atlantic Canada kick their smoking habit. Prisoners were no longer allowed to smoke in federal institutions as of May 5, so prison officials say the money spent on extra snack food was well spent. Etienne Allard, a spokesman for Corrections Canada, said prisoners were offered the snacks free of charge for the first three months after the four prisons in the region went smoke-free. Most of the $25,000 was spent at the Atlantic Institution in Renous, the maximum security prison in New Brunswick.
