Counties renew housing contract

GEORGIA - Sandy Springs has renewed a contract for housing its inmates in the Doraville city jail, which calls for a slightly increase in the daily fee. The city will pay $50 a day for each inmate temporarly locked up in Doraville, up from the existing $45 fee. The amount will be pro-rated, City Attorney Wendell Willard said, so Sandy Springs will only pay in four-hour increments when inmates are sheltered for less than a full day.

Willard told the City Council Monday it was an “attractive” agreement. Sandy Springs also is negotiating with the city of Smyrna for short-term housing of inmates. Smyrna has proposed a cheaper daily fee – $46.80 – but it’s a longer drive from Sandy Springs and will likely be used as a backup facility, city officials said. Read more.
