MICHIGAN - Michigan criminals who commit crimes before they turn 18 could not be sentenced to life in prison with no chance at parole under legislation passed by the Democrat-led state House. But a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop says the bills passed Thursday, mostly along party lines, are unlikely to be taken up in the Republican-led Senate. The legislation would not stop judges from sentencing young criminals to life in prison. But offenders at some point would be able to petition for parole. Supporters say the bills would allow some young offenders to get a second chance, particularly those who were not the main offender in a crime. Read more.
