Many officers now trained on Tasers

MICHIGAN - As soon as the two electrically charged probes hit Corrections Officer Jimmie Baker's back, he yelled, rolled up on his toes, and went to the floor. Later, the Jackson County Jail employee said he could not control the scream or prevent collapse as the voltage-packed, five-second pulse incapacitated his neuromuscular system.

"It feels like someone is burning you in the back," Baker said at a recent Taser training at the Chanter Road jail, during which he volunteered to be shot.

Nearly all county sheriff's deputies and corrections officers now are trained to use Tasers as a nonlethal way to control combative or uncooperative suspects or inmates. Read more.
