NEW JERSEY - I am a corrections officer at Riverfront State Prison in Camden, where I have worked for the last 10 years. There is talk about closing Riverfront. I suspect that it is for political reasons and for profit, but politics and profit cannot outweigh the severe repercussions of such a blunder. A multitude of troubles would result from the closing of Riverfront State Prison including more overcrowding, hazardous housing conditions for the inmates and unsafe working conditions for officers and other staff members. Most, if not all, of New Jersey's prisons are already overcrowded. Many inmates sentenced to serve time in state facilities are currently housed in county jails because there is no space available for them in the prisons. Read more.
