Fight to keep Pontiac open continues

ILLINOIS - The fight to keep Pontiac Correctional Center open continues, and those waging it shouldn’t let their guard down, even with the arrest of the governor who wants to close the prison, Pontiac Mayor Scott McCoy says.

“This fight is not over,” McCoy said in a telephone interview this morning, 24 hours after the news broke that Gov. Rod Blagojevich had been arrested by federal authorities.

Although there’s cause for “a little celebration” that the man who has been trying to close the prison for much of this year may not remain in office, “It’s still a sad day for Illinois,” the mayor said. “It’s almost embarrassing to be from Illinois, especially being an elected official from Illinois. It’s kind of a mixed-reaction day. I want everybody to realize this fight still continues; don’t let your guard down, don’t think it’s over. We’ve still got to fight for this thing,” because the process for closing the prison is still in motion. “The fight continues.” Read more.
