| OpEd: Sex offender housing needs review |

NEW YORK - I commend Gov. David Paterson for his forthright approach and offer a suggestion of how to end a waste of our tax dollars. I live in Ogdensburg, home to one of New York's sexual violent predator units. This unit was totally remodeled and includes a gym and expansive outdoor recreational area. It is situated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. State taxpayers pay a staggering $240,000 per year for each sexual violent predator housed in such units across the state. Ogdensburg, at last count, has 43 predators, translating into a price tag of $10.3 million a year. Equally amazing is the fact that sexual violent predators have the option of refusing any treatment programs offered. Many are encouraged to do so by their lawyers. With drastic cuts facing schools, hospitals, municipalities, etc., I feel these sexual violent predator units currently under the umbrella of the Office of Mental Health are a misuse of our dollars.
