A bill authored by a state senator from East Los Angeles that would make it easier for news reporters to gain access to inmates in California prisons was approved by the state Senate last Thursday. The bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 32-11, will now move to the Assembly's Public Safety Committee, said Democratic Sen. Gloria Romero. In 1996, regulations were enacted that limited media access to prisoners. Romero said three previous legislative attempts to overturn the regulations have failed. The senator said she is pleased the bill passed with support from both Republicans and Democrats. "I hope the governor sees this as the Legislature's action to fix what's wrong at our correctional institutions and allow public scrutiny to play a necessary role in cleaning up a dysfunctional agency," she said. Romero has been holding hearings on prison reform issues. |
