SOUTH CAROLINA - Columbia International University awarded degrees Friday to its first class of Kirkland Correctional Institution inmates, 14 men who now will spread out among the state’s toughest prisons as Christian peacemakers and caregivers. There were joyous smiles, hugs and more than a few tears as family and friends watched the 14 men, in academic caps and gowns, process through Kirkland’s visitors room to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance.” They were followed by the faculty of CIU, the private evangelical Bible college just across the Broad River that launched the associate of arts degree program at the behest of S.C. Corrections director Jon Ozmint. As the men passed, Rebecca Rockholt of Hartsville caught her son Joseph’s eye, gave a little wave and dabbed her eyes as the tears began to fall. Read more.
