OpEd: Big projects sit empty

NEW YORK - The state Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) and the state Office of Mental Health Services (OMH) are cutting line staff, but big money projects were allowed to be completed and now sit empty. At MidState Correctional Facility, DOCS and OMH have created a new wing within a building inside the compound that cost taxpayers approximately $1 million, yet now sits empty (since completion in May) due to administrative shortsightedness at the Albany level with no funds to staff it for inmate mental health needs.

The civil confinement building for sex offenders co-located at the MidState Correctional / CNY Psychiatric Center complex cost in excess of $50 million dollars and a revamped Special Housing Unit 200 with additions and upgrades for mentally ill inmates located at Marcy Correctional across the street from MidState cost well over $25 million yet both these projects sit empty as well.
