MAINE - Maine's court system was spared additional cuts in the supplemental budget presented by Gov. John Baldacci on Tuesday, but he declined to fund a $690,000 shortfall for the judicial branch, which has trimmed $1 million this year by freezing 50 job openings within its work force of 500. The budget gap means cases will take longer to complete because the courts do not have enough staff to process them quickly. "There will be significant delays on the civil side. That is really going to harm Maine citizens and Maine businesses," said Mary Ann Lynch, director of court information for the judicial branch. |
