| County seeks grant for new juvenile hall |

CALIFORNIA - Despite a bleak economic outlook, Monterey County supervisors approved Tuesday applying for a $35 million grant to pay for a new juvenile hall in Salinas. The proposed Monterey County Juvenile Justice Complex is an $85 million, 150-bed detention facility. The current 50-year-old juvenile hall, off Natividad Road, has 114 beds. "In the long term, we desperately need a new juvenile hall," said Probation Chief Manny Real. If awarded, the grant would require the county to match 25 percent of its value to be eligible before construction could start by 2013. Read more.
