Prisons prepare for Christmas

NEW ZEALAND - There will be few special Christmas treats for those who will spend the festive season behind bars. Lance Alexander from the Corrections Department says while Christmas is acknowledged as being a special day in prisons, it is celebrated in a very low-key way.

He says prisoners can receive approved gifts from friends and family, and a lot of prisoners make gifts they can send home. Staff are able to attend a church service held by the prison chaplain, but only prisoners with the right security clearance are allowed to go. Read more.
