| Agencies try to keep parolees crime free |

MICHIGAN - Mere weeks after he was released from prison, James Mitchell broke into a Summit Township home to steal copper piping. The 39-year-old needed money to buy his daughter school clothes, he recently told Jackson County Circuit Judge John McBain. McBain didn't think much of his story, scolded him for repeatedly violating his parole and returned him to prison, the place he has lived for most of the last 20 years. His was sentenced to 24 to 30 months. Cases such as Mitchell's are exactly the type that local law enforcement offices and the Department of Corrections are trying to avoid. As the parole rate increases due to a tightening state budget, the agencies are ramping up efforts to deter parolees from returning to lives of crime.Read more.
