OpEd: Build people not prisons
By Florida Courier
Published: 12/23/2008

FLORIDA - To recap from last week: Florida needs to build 19 prisons each with 1,300 beds in the next five years at a cost of $1.9 billion to handle prison population growth. Operational costs are an additional $26 million per prison per year. It will cost Floridians a one-time investment of $76,923 per prisoner to build new prisons and $20,000 per year to keep each prisoner locked up. Statistically, half of these new prisoners will be young Black men and women.

My plan: Take prison-building money to build dormitories at Florida’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) – FAMU, Bethune-Cookman, Edward Waters and Florida Memorial – instead. Take prison operating money to fund a school-based program that invests in at least 2,500 youth a year who are considered “at risk.” The commitment – keep your nose clean through junior high and high school, graduate, and Florida will fund a full ride at a state HBCU.
