TEXAS - Two grief-stricken parents showed up in a Harris County courtroom last week to plea for accountability in the death of their daughter who was hit by John Jacob Winne as she stepped off her school bus. "We are here for Nicole," said mother Valoree Lalime, outside the courtroom. We would all like to be there for Nicole, adding chapter and verse on the need to keep roads free of drunken drivers and making sure that the consequences match the offense. But truly being there for Nicole and other victims of drunken driving requires looking beyond stiff sentencing and punishment. The Lalimes have urged others to join advocacy groups that oppose drunken driving. M.A.D.D., for instance, advocates for sobriety checkpoints and ignition interlocks to keep inebriated individuals from driving. Read more.
