PAKISTAN - Sindh High Court (SHC) Justice Amir Hani Muslim directed the shifting of all 326 Under Trial Prisoners (UTPs) of the Malir District Jail to other prisons of Sindh within two weeks. The orders came in a public interest litigation filed by local journalist and human rights activist Iqbal Kazmi. Sindh Special Home Secretary Kamran Dost, Additional Health Secretary, Sindh Health Director General, Sindh Prisons IG Mushtaq Shah, Malir Jail Superintendent Ashique Ali Bozdar and Mirpurkhas Prison Superintendent were in attendance on Monday. Sindh Prisons IG Mushtaq Shah, in his written statement supported by figures and charts, informed the bench that he took charge as Prisons IG only three days back and upon going through the records he found that blood samples of 7,095 inmates from different prisons of Sindh that have been screened. Out of these, 885 were suffering from Hepatitis B and C but only 181 were provided treatment. Justice Amir Hani Muslim, who recently visited the Malir prison, also expressed deep anguish over the non provision of medical treatment to UTPs injured in the mutiny by prisoners on October 1, 2008.
