| Deadlock continues over contract |

MAINE - Corrections officers at the Cumberland County Jail overwhelmingly rejected the county's latest contract offer, which means the protracted negotiations will bring in an outside fact-finder to try to breach the divide. The union voted Monday to reject the proposed agreement, 106 to 13, which means the corrections officers will be entering a second year of negotiations without an updated pact. The two sides began bargaining in the fall of 2007. The deal would have covered only 2008 and would have included 3 percent cost-of-living raises and some increases to hourly pay based on longevity. The union's bargaining team had presented the proposal to the membership without a recommendation on approval, said bargaining unit president Will Russell.
