IOWA - A quirk in state law allows registered sex offenders to live near Iowa schools or child-care centers opened within the last six years. Although Iowa has a law banning sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of such centers, the restriction applies only to those that have operated continuously before July 1, 2002. County attorneys take different approaches to the law, with some treating all schools and child-care centers alike and others such as Polk County that abide by the letter of the law.
