New role for Ariz. sheriff

ARIZONA - Joe Arpaio, the sheriff of Maricopa County in Arizona, added his name to the seemingly never-ending list of reality television show stars when he appeared on “Smile ...You’re Under Arrest!” on Saturday, the show’s debut. “Smile,” which appears on the Fox Reality Channel, features Mr. Arpaio along with actors and undercover officers in sting operations aimed at capturing people with outstanding warrants.

Sheriff Arpaio, who refers to himself as “America’s toughest sheriff,” has become nationally known for setting up Tent City Jail in Phoenix to house surplus prisoners rather than releasing them. He was sued in July by the American Civil Liberties Union for discriminatory practices, according to aclu.org. Read more.
