| OpEd: Culture shuns faith-based approaches |

FLORIDA - It was saddening to read the op-ed piece "Rehabilitation is the work of inmates" by Department of Corrections employee Gary King in the Dec. 26 Democrat. It was not that his central premise of individual responsibility is wrong. It is not. Rather, his piece captures all too well the hopelessness, pessimism and deep despair that has worked its way deeply into the culture of DOC, and may, in fact, be its own worst enemy. First, we need to begin with the truth: The 33 percent recidivism rate that Mr. King so proudly proclaimed is three years post-release. The figures for five years are closer to 50 percent recidivism. Nobody wants to know what it is 10 years out, but my guess is closer to 70 percent. In no place that I have ever been or seen public service, other than "corrections" could such a record be defended.
