Officers fight for camps

NEW YORK - An intensive campaign to fight the closure of Camp Pharsalia and three other state prison camps is being launched by the state correctional officers union. The closings would harm the communities in which the facilities are located and shouldn't be considered until the state Legislature does a study of the state Department of Correctional Services' operations, union officials said.

"Our main thing is that we want taxpayers and voters to know the truth about the proposed closings," Tom Haas, central region vice president for the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, said Monday.

Camp Pharsalia, a minimum-security facility about 12 miles west of Norwich, has about 84 full-time equivalent employees, including a number of Broome County residents. Shutting down Pharsalia and three other camps would save $26 million in the 2009-10 fiscal year, according to Department of Correctional Services' estimates. Read more.
