| Grant plea gets cold shoulder |

VERMONT - A community action group seeking support for a grant to provide transitional housing for released convicts received a chilly and inhospitable reception from some members of the Select Board. Elizabeth Eddy of BROC-Community Action in Southwestern Vermont appeared before the board to offer details of a grant the agency applied for Friday to provide offenders eligible for release with short-term housing subsidies, life and job skills training and mental health and substance abuse counseling. BROC would provide housing and other services for up to eight people at a time. Each person would be able to participate in the program for six to 12 months. The grant, if approved by the Vermont Department of Corrections, would provide $103,000 for the Bennington area from a $1.2 million program. The grant is included in a bill to restructure the corrections system in Vermont that will be addressed by the Legislature when the new session commences Jan. 7. Read more.
