ALABAMA - The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office has had its fair share of overcrowding due to influxes in state inmates, but unlike other sheriff agencies in Alabama, the problem has lessened in recent years. “(The Alabama Department of Corrections) are better now than they have been in a long time,” said Cullman Sheriff Tyler Roden. “Sometimes I wish they could be more timely. But oftentimes, they work with us.” According to the Associated Press, the number of state inmates being held in county jails longer than the court-approved 30-day limit has been creeping higher two years after a backlog was eliminated. A total of 64 state inmates were on the list in November and the number climbed to 76 last week before settling back to 65 Tuesday. Read more.
