| New jail at critical step |

ALABAMA - n all the delays, hang-ups and complications in the completion of the Madison County metro jail addition, officials say there is one positive sign - the process has moved forward enough to make it time to consider logistics and operation. But the next phase of the jail is fraught with its own complications, including creating a whole new set of jail operating procedures and moving approximately 240 inmates. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and Madison County Commission President Mike Gillespie announced last week that the addition wouldn't be completed by the new year, but that a transition team had already been created to help move the process forward. "The good news is, we're far enough along in the project to have a transition team," said Huntsville Deputy Police Chief Mark Hudson, who has been asked to lead the team. "We're all wanting to get it open and functioning as soon as possible, but we want to do it in a manner that is safe for the inmates, the correctional officers and the community at large. It's quite an undertaking." Hudson said the transition team is designed to be fluid and flexible, allowing a continuous flow of representatives from several entities - the architecture firm, the city's general services and facilities departments, municipal court, the police department, the sheriff's department and the command staff of the jail, to name a few - to participate in the phases when they're needed.
