British Columbia, Canada, is training prison inmates to clean up the carcasses of 19 million slaughtered chickens in the avian flu epidemic. About 300 federal and provincial employees have also been added to the cleanup roster for the ongoing cull, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said last Friday. The prisoners are not needed immediately, but they will be used as backups in case a shortage of workers develops. Inmates have been used in other provincial emergencies, like sandbagging during floods. More than 30 farms in the Fraser Valley region were affected as the flu jumped from farm to farm even outside the 3.5-mile restricted zone. It has moved closer to the Washington border and as far west as a Vancouver suburb. The bird flu in British Columbia is a less virulent strain than the one that infected and killed at least 23 people in southeast Asia. Several people in the province who were infected suffered mild symptoms and quickly recovered. The cull should be completed by May 21. |
