COLORADO - Inmates and offenders who have served their time in jail or in prison and return to the community often slip back, or at times, purposely return to a life of crime and antisocial behavior. Many are habitual or chronic relapses, and the recidivism rate can vary but increases have been noted in recent years. One of the reasons for the tendency to relapse is the stress, lack of confidence and lack of coping skills on the part of many of the offenders when they are released. Others think the lack of “community assimilation” is to blame. In August of 2008, an innovative and grass roots program was begun at the Advantage Treatment Center (ATC) in Sterling. The program, called “Life Coaching,” is designed to help ex-offenders, housed in a halfway house, to make the transition back into the community. Read more.
