W.Va. Supreme Court reviewing prisons

WEST VIRGINIA - The state Supreme Court’s review of West Virginia’s prison and jail system is under way with the hiring of a full-time person to monitor the process. Former regional jail official Tom Scott started his $65,000-a-year job on Monday. Scott will be responsible for working with a seven-member commission the court created to study conditions in the state’s prisons and 10 regional jails.

Scott will be working under an order from the court’s chief justice that gives him authority to enter all regional jails and prisons to interview administrators, staff and inmates about overcrowding, programs and other issues. Scott was the administrator of the Southern Regional Jail when he and four others there were fired in October for two instances of mistaken releases. Read more.
