OHIO - Euclid will permanently shut down two-thirds of its jail, including the entire women's wing, next month and lay off 16 corrections officers to deal with the city's financial problems. The cost of housing inmates will now fall on the county, which is dealing with a $55 million deficit of its own. Cuyahoga County Sheriff Gerald McFaul said Monday that budget cuts in his office may force him to stop housing low-level offenders. Euclid will eliminate one-third of its $2.4 million deficit by closing 16 of the 32 men's cells and sending female inmates to other jails. The city also eliminated the positions of 13 full-time officers, three part-time officers and a secretary. Law Director Chris Frey said if McFaul can't house the additional inmates, the county will have to pay for space at the Bedford and Geauga County jails to hold them. The county already pays millions of dollars every year to house inmates in neighboring cities and counties because of overcrowding. "The functionality of the criminal justice system isn't going to change," Frey said. "An individual might spend more time in the car being transferred." Read more.
