Inmate kept in remand 5 years

AUSTRALIA - Four inmates at the Belconnen Remand Centre have been living in the facility for more than a year, with one of them on remand for nearly five years. The lengthy stays come despite the ACT Government, Opposition and Human Rights Commissioner all condemning the conditions at the soon-to-be-mothballed site.

The detainees are among the many waiting for the opening of the ACT's first jail, the Alexander Maconochie Centre, which has been delayed by six months. The revelation comes days after a riot at the facility that left six prison officers in hospital and two prisoners with minor injuries. Corrections Minister John Hargreaves described the incident as a ''blue or dust-up''.

''It would happen probably at a Catholic seminary because you have a number of adults put in a supercharged environment,'' MrHargreaves said. Mr Hargreaves said he could not comment on the circumstances of the four inmates in custody for more than 12 months, but confirmed one prisoner had been at the facility since April 2004.
