OHIO - The state will close youth correctional facilities in Delaware and Marion, Ohio, the Department of Youth Services announced today. Director Tom Stickrath said the Marion Juvenile Correctional Facility and Freedom Center in Delaware will shut down by July for budgetary reasons, saving $24 million annually, and allowing for expansion of community-based options. "The decision to close a facility is never easy, the significance of this announcement on the employees and communities affected was not taken lightly," Stickrath said in a statement. The 10-year-old Marion facility has 176 residents and 302 employees, while the e Freedom Center, built in 1956, has 18 residents and 29 employees. The youth corrections population statewide fell from an average of 1,843 in 2007 to 1,555 in 2008, the agency said. |
