Pa. warden will retire

PENNSYLVANIA - Embattled Northumberland County Prison Warden Ralph “Rick” Reish is set to step down from his post. Reports indicate Reish will retire in October when he turns 65.

Reish was not available to accept a phone call from the Standard Journal at 9 a.m. this morning to confirm his retirement, and the Northumberland County commissioners had not yet reported for work either. The commissioners reportedly said Reish had reached his own decision to step down and he wasn’t being forced out.

During his term as warden, a female inmate accused Reish of raping her while she was being transported from the Northumberland County Prison to Lycoming County Prison in 2003. No charges were filed as a result of the investigation. Also in 2004, several corrections officers were arrested for sexually assaulting an inmate. The charges were eventually dropped, but several officers were convicted of drug offenses as a result of the investigation. Read more.
