S.C. responds to sewage blame

Thursday the Department of Corrections responded to accusations that its garbage caused this weekend's huge raw sewage backup in Columbia. That claim came from the city of Columbia after a 526,000-gallon spill that could have contaminated the Broad River.

Near the center of the sprawling state corrections department complex near Broad River Road, you'll find a contraption called a bar screen. The bar screen is designed to filter out items that are not supposed to wind up in city sewer lines running through the property.

But Columbia city officials say somehow things that got into the sewage system there made their way into a pumping station roughly a mile and a half south of the prison property. The items clogged up the pumps and caused more than a half-million gallons of raw sewage to spill onto the riverbank, and possibly into the Broad River itself. Read more.
