OHIO - The state said it will save $24 million a year by closing the doors of two juvenile correction facilities, but the union representing juvenile corrections officers said the move does not come without some risk, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported on Thursday. The state's Department of Youth Services will shut down facilities in Marion and Delaware in favor of more community based programs. State officials admit the move will create a slight overcrowding problem at the remaining juvenile correctional facilities, but they said it will also create an opportunity for low-risk juvenile offenders to seek the help they need at programs close to home, Kocot reported. The Marion Juvenile Correctional Facility is currently home to 176 residents and more than 300 employees. According to the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, the facility is plagued with violent assaults and gang activity. The association claims that at least one corrections officer is injured at the facility each week, and closing the doors could lead to more trouble. Read more.
