| Tougher DUI penalties may cost state |

WISCONSIN - Getting tough on drunken drivers won't be cheap. Two of the most talked about measures to strengthen the state's drunken driving laws come with large price tags, which may doom them given a projected $5.4 billion state budget shortfall. Criminalizing first offense drunken driving, which now is just a traffic citation and not a crime, would cost another $8.3 million a year. That's according to a Fiscal Bureau estimate obtained Thursday by The Associated Press. Critics of that idea, primarily the powerful Tavern League lobby that represents the state's bars and restaurants, have repeatedly said that the high cost of the proposal will make it nearly impossible to pass. The legislative Fiscal Bureau analysis was provided to state Rep. Peggy Krusick, D-Milwaukee, who's been working with lawmakers and others to toughen drunken driving laws.
